Mexico's Copper Canyon
Semana Santa Festival with the Tarahumara People
Copper Canyon is the undiscovered "Nepal of the
West." The Tarahumara people live in this rugged country in much
the same way they have lived for hundreds of years, and the surroundings
will probably make you feel as if you are in another time and far
away from the United Statesyet Copper Canyon is so closeand
a safe place to visit as well.
The most important ceremony of the Tarahumara calendar
is Semana Santa, the week leading to Easter Sunday. Bonfires are lit on
the mesas and coming in from distant ranchos will be hundreds of
traditionally dressed and painted dancers who will gather in the plaza
to drum and dance and celebrate this important ritual of renewal.
